Hold up. It sounds like they are advocating for differential treatment based on gender. I thought we were all equal and deserved to be treated the same.
As soon as I see woke and DEI my heart rate monitor goes off hopefully in the not to distant future Seymour joins a Tibetan monestary and just leaves New Zealand alone . I see a future without the Act party or me having to go for anger management . He is the opposite of anything I would want my son to learn from other males and he is the poster child for Fascism , Racism , Homophobia , Misogyny the reason I am afraid not of him but what he represents , his followers will feel it’s ok to be like him , he will also drag in groups like destiny church and tamaki . Scary times post Covid I thought the world would get better but I feel like sanity hangs in the balance at the moment thankyou for calling out the unhinged
What a seriously out of touch bunch of misogynists libertarian selfish creatures ACT are! Their policies are fascist, racist and have no relevance to the majority in NZ.
As a man, who has suffered discrimination by other men and women, I can tell you something most men will not admit to. Some of us are sensitive. Some of us lack social skills. Some of us lack confidence, at least some of the time. Some of us suffer from chronic anxiety. Some of us cannot use a public urinal, whether because of a simple phobia or because of PTSD. These are some of the reasons, rarely mentioned that others use against men, to mock them, humiliate, exclude, make some of us feel small and inadequate. And the consequences are profound. This kind of abuse builds up over time. Some grow stronger through this abuse, but happier? I doubt it. For most, the abuse only saps away at our will to live and by middle age, instead of being more comfortable being themselves, they feel like life will never get better after all. Many of them give up at this stage. We are not just individuals. We are social creatures, like it or not. And to be rejected time and time again can be a death sentence.
I believe Libertarian minded people are as different to the majority of us, as autistic people are. There is scant research on Libertarians, but what little there is suggests they think differently. One interesting finding is that hardly anything bothers them until they feel like one of their individual rights has been slighted. Then they can get very upset. It's the part about nothing bothering them that is the red flag. Global warming? They shrug and say we just have to adapt, if they believe in it at all (most don't). People starving? Not their problem. They tell me to donate to a charity if it truly upsets me. Smoking causing cancer? That's your choice to smoke. Their precious money shouldn't be used by the government to do anything about it. I could go on. I can't claim it's a lack of empathy, but it sure sounds like it.
Well over half a century ago, my Great Uncle murdered a woman because he was (likely) intellectually disabled and was treated as an outsider by other men on the basis of masculinity. As an example of how specific men can be particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of masculinity and this still becomes an issue where the violence is enacted on women. But that day wrecked everyone’s lives; his, the woman’s, her family’s, our family’s.
The shrapnel is never limited just to the person it is affecting. This is ACT discovering that the things feminists have been talking about for centuries have negative effects on men too. Absolutely typical of them to blame feminists for it though.
Interesting idea comparing autism of libertarianism. Autism specifically is a MISMATCH in empathy rather than a lack of it - there are three types of empathy and autistic people ‘feel’ these very unevenly. That is why you get autistic people who relate strongly to animals, or who experience empathy for people but are unable to communicate it or process it in typical ways. For example, I have an over abundance of affective empathy which means I can relate very well to different people and perspectives internally, but my cognitive empathy was something that was naturally deficient (though I think it’s gotten better — I’m pretty sure empathy is a learnable skill).
But not a skill libertarians value, which maybe explains why they have so little of it.
I hear you. For much of my younger life I felt like this, while no one around me knew. Somehow getting older allowed my brain to process others actions and words differently but I don't know how that happened. Many times if found even those punching down or seeming confident feel the same but never let it show. I think some are just better at hiding it than others.
This is classic culture war deflection. ACT's evidence about the victimisation of men ignores the fact that not all men are being victimised. Only a particular group of men fall into that group. Those are the men that don't have access to the benefits of the sort of secure work and career paths that lead to the peak social positions that guarantee men the baubles of hegemonc masculinity. The sorts of social positions reserved for the winners of the class war ACT refuses to talk about. Its the male winners of that contest that victimise the men who lose that contest, not women. Hence the need for David Seymour to deflect.
Indeed. And goes to show the hollowness of the concept of equality. No wonder it's one of young Dave's faves. Re gender, well equal to whom? Which men, where?
I'd add where masculinity is concerned, the pecking orders within pecking orders are just as brutal, just as damaging.
I am constantly irked by equality narratives that are used to remove or defund accessible, inclusive health services because they exist as special treatment for an oppressed group. The fact that some men believe they have entitlement to all spaces everywhere all of the time is in itself a health issue.
Too true! I want to talk about spaces at some point, and how they are being weaponised against minorities and the 99% (as is typical in oppressive societies) — when I can get my thoughts together on it, maybe 😅
Internet as a public space is not a discussion we’ve had and it’s allowed companies to dominate it.
Yes, most teachers are female, nurses also. Historically, employment seen as "soft" (i.e. roles with a parental/nurturing dimension) have been avoided by men, in favour of more manly pursuits, such as trades. The "womanly" roles paid less anyway, because it was women's work. Despite the disparity in numbers, males are more likely to be principals and nurse managers, more likely to be lecturers than primary school teachers, and more likely to be doctors than nurses. Notably, all roles are open to all. Cry me a river, boys.
We also persecuted male teachers for being potential sexual predators. The younger they work with, the more likely abuse allegations are. Teaching hasn’t been safe for men — but this was created by hysteria around men being in “caretaker” roles and the breakdown of gender confinements. Hence why we convicted a gay preschool teacher of child abuse while letting half a dozen women off before even getting to trial of accusations from the same supposed mass-abuse event.
This doesn’t seem like a facet of society ACT seem particularly dedicated to fixing. In fact, they have close associations with the FSU who is importing this exact brand of queerphobia into New Zealand against Drag Queens right now, 40 years later.

I agree with you. Theres something going on with their brain wiring.

Very well said. Toxic masculinity needs to go for all our sakes but ACT are on a big drive to expand it.

Beautiful response. Far too intelligent for the Sleazemore

I picked this up via my son. Its freaking terrifying Andrew Tate BS
Hey Sapphi. Lovely response! Nice bit of bite to it, but fair enough.
There are things that are not right. I’m fully with you. And better that we do it by talking together rather than at each other.

Bravo!
Tautoko this great post.
Short and sweet
