No it's not normal at all. And those in the know know what the government is doing - they are dismantling our democracy to forge it in their image i.e. corporate neoliberalism - but one particularly uncaring of the masses, and of the most vulnerable.

But then check 'political polarization'. Neoliberalism, Advertising & PR and commercial media has thrived on tech-driven "more heat, less light". The politics of distraction. Language is important, as Geoff Palmer's use of rhetorical understatement suggests.
Here at ground level in Godzone we are fortunate to have kākā who 'follow the money' and tui who remind us to look up, take courage and reach out, even as some of us fall under the juggernaut as victims of untreated mental illness, screen addicts or apostles of political cults. And tragic fool perpetrators of the New Investor State.
The situation is globally dire; take the next step anyway. Avoiding polarizing, distracting clichés "like the plague" hehe..

They will, once they're drafted to fight America's war against China, Ukraine-style.
